California Governor Gavin Newsom has signed a new gaming compact with the Trinidad Rancheria tribe, extending the tribe’s right to operate its casino through December 31, 2025, under updated terms.
The agreement allows the tribe to continue offering slot machines, blackjack, and other casino games on tribal land in accordance with the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act. The renewed compact ensures continuity of operations at the tribe’s Cher-Ae Heights Casino, a key local employer and revenue generator.
The updated compact builds on the tribe’s long-standing relationship with the state. The original agreement was signed in 1999 and was previously updated in 2022 and 2023. While the latest extension does not introduce new provisions, it gives both parties time to negotiate a comprehensive long-term deal without disrupting casino operations or impacting tribal revenue.
The agreement maintains existing revenue-sharing terms, ensuring a portion of casino earnings continues to support California’s public programs and infrastructure. It also upholds strict regulatory requirements, including independent audits and oversight by the California Gambling Control Commission.
Employment and training remain priorities under the compact, which encourages the hiring of Native Americans, local residents, and nearby community members. It also promotes workforce development in the gaming and hospitality sectors.
With the extension now in effect, the tribe and state officials are expected to focus on finalizing a permanent agreement ahead of the 2025 expiration.
