Following the completion of the update project of Casino Regina, SaskGaming, the Crown corporation that operates Saskatchewan's provincial casinos, is now turning its attention to Casino Moose Jaw.

The casino is slated to undergo extensive upgrades for the first time since its opening 21 years ago. The provincial government announced in May that a CAD 5 million ($3.7 million) facelift would commence in late June, aimed at creating “a brighter, more welcoming, and convenient environment for guests.”

The construction is expected to continue until early 2024, reports Moose Jaw Today, and the renovations are part of SaskGaming's multi-year modernization plan to enhance its properties in the Canadian province.

Brian Miller, Director of Communications for SaskGaming, explained that the organization has recently completed the over CAD 20 million ($14.7 million) update of Casino Regina over a four-year period. The renovation of Casino Moose Jaw by early next year would mark the completion of the overall five-year modernization plan.

The focus of the renovations will be on the gaming and food and beverage areas of the casino. The improvements will include the installation of brighter lights, new carpeting, and an updated floor plan to ensure a smooth flow for visitors, thereby enhancing their overall experience.

"We want them to see that the casino reflects our commitment and (to) stay on the cutting edge of casino gaming in our province," stated Miller, as per the cited source. While the renovations are underway, Casino Moose Jaw will remain open to the public, with tarps blocking off the affected areas.

This renovation will be the first extensive one since the casino's opening in 2002, with the only previous upgrade occurring in 2009, when the gaming floor was expanded.

SaskGaming's 2021-22 annual report indicates a notable improvement in its financial performance. The organization recorded a net income of CAD 19.1 million ($14 million) last year compared to a net loss of $13.4 million ($9.9 million) during the previous fiscal year.

The modernization projects at Casino Regina and Casino Moose Jaw are part of a broader CAD 2.1 billion plan by Saskatchewan's Crown corporations in 2023-24. Other Crown corporations, including SaskTel, SaskEnergy, SaskPower, SaskWater, and SGI, are also investing substantial amounts in their respective sectors during this fiscal year.
