A new poll shows that 71 percent of likely Florida voters support Amendment 3, which would require voter approval of casino gambling decisions.

Support is strong across all age ranges, all demographic groups, all political parties and all regions of the state. The poll was taken by Hill Research Consultants, and the findings are summarized in this memorandum (Amendment 3 Research Findings).

Only 18 percent of the 1,209 voters surveyed between July 18 and 24 said they would vote against Amendment 3. The remainder was undecided.

"We start in a uniquely strong position," said John Sowinski, president of Voters in Charge, which is behind Amendment 3. "The simplicity of the amendment is its strength. Amendment 3 asks the simple question, ‘Who do you trust: Florida voters, or the politicians and the lobbyists who influence them?’"

The survey also found that Amendment 3 supporters not only start in a strong position, but also have an enormous advantage in terms of message. Voters surveyed found messages in support of Amendment 3 much more convincing than messages opposed to it.

The Yes on 3 campaign also recently announced the endorsement of the League of Women Voters of Florida and the Florida Chamber of Commerce.

"We are confident but by no means are we complacent," said Sowinski. "We anticipate the gambling industry and its lobbyists will fight hard against Amendment 3 and we are ready for that challenge."

While Amendment 3 has strong support among voters and a growing coalition of advocates, its supporters are taking nothing for granted. The campaign recently announced a $30 million media buy to support passage of the measure.
