Macau: Gaming revenue growth to drop in 2012

(Macau).- The secretary for economy and finance, Francis Tam Pak Yuen, says Macau’s casino gross gaming revenue growth is expected to post a sharp slowdown in 2012. Mr Tam said he expects the growth rate to be in the low double-digits or high single-digits this year, Macao Daily News reported.

F

or the whole of last year, local casinos recorded total gross gaming revenue of us$ 33.5 billion, up by 42 percent. For the first two months of 2012, Macau’s casinos reported gross gaming revenue of us$ 6 billion, up by 28 percent. Macau government estimates regarding the growth of the casino industry are traditionally very conservative.

Taking into account the expected revenue from direct taxes from gaming included in the 2012 government budget, presented in November last year, that would actually mean a contraction of the sector, opposing the general view among industry players and analysts.
