"Betfair’s iPhone App takes advantage of the handsets’ multi-touch interface and high-resolution screen, offering our iPhone customers the same core exchange functionality as the main Betfair site," says head of mobile Charles Palmer.

"Thanks to Apple’s incredible innovation the iPhone raises the bar in terms of mobile gaming, which allows Betfair to deliver an industry first and demonstrates our ability to adapt to new technologies."

The news comes as a shock, since real-money gambling apps haven't been allowed onto the App Store before.

Betfair's app uses GPS to make sure that users are in the UK or Ireland before allowing them to place a bet - a move designed to ensure it doesn't flout remote gambling laws in other countries like the US.

Palmer says Betfair signed up 40% more mobile users last year, with mobile revenues growing 50% year-on-year. The company will be hoping to boost both figures from its new iPhone business.
