Virginia’s sports wagering market continued its upward trajectory in April 2025, with bettors placing over $609.7 million in wagers, according to figures released by the Virginia Lottery. The monthly handle marked an 8.2% increase compared to April of the previous year.
Between April 1 and 30, a total of fourteen licensed mobile operators and three retail casinos were authorized to accept bets across the state. Combined, they generated $609,713,988 in wagers. Players won $546,920,765 over the same period, reflecting a 10.30% hold for operators.
Adjusted Gross Revenue (AGR), which factors in total wagers minus winnings and authorized deductions, amounted to $56.1 million for the month. This figure included $56.6 million in AGR from mobile sportsbooks, offset by a negative $473,390 in AGR from retail casinos.
No bonuses or promotional deductions were claimed during the month, while other deductions totaled approximately $6.6 million. State law mandates a 15% tax on AGR. For April, that translated into $8,517,816.52 in tax payments from eleven operators who reported net-positive AGR.
Of the total tax revenue, $8.3 million was directed to Virginia’s General Fund, while approximately $213,000 was allocated to the Problem Gambling Treatment and Support Fund overseen by the Virginia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services.
