But little else was upbeat in the slot report. Mohegan Sun won us$ 62.9 million last month, a 3.8 decrease from the us$ 65.4 million won in October 2008. “Using handle as a measure is deceiving because it includes free slot play,” said Mohegan CEO and president Mitchell Etess. “The win is a more sensible mode of judgment.”

That said, the win could have been better given the extra Saturday this October, Etess said. But the figures represent a step in the right direction. The decline was much less than the 11.3 % fall- off in September.

Foxwoods Resort Casino and MGM Grand at Foxwoods also reported a decrease of 4 % on a win of us$ 54.8 million in October. The handle declined from us$ 720.5 million to us$ 634.9 million. “Despite the fact that we’ve seen a slight decrease in revenue compared to October of last year, our near 100 % occupancy rates demonstrate that we continue to attract consumers,” said Michael Speller, president of Mashantucket Pequot Gaming Enterprises.

That revenues were flat from September to October is a nice sign, said Foxwoods senior vice president Robert Victoria, especially with October as a transition month, the gateway to winter.

At Mohegan Sun, players won back an average of 91.81 cents of every dollar wagered, higher than the 91.40 cents paid back last October. At Foxwoods, gamblers won back 91.4 cents for every dollar bet, less than the 92.06 cents from a year before.

Mohegan Sun won us$ 9,350 per game and us$ 302 per game per day in October. For the same month last year, the casino won us$ 9,700 per game, or us$ 313 per game per day. With fewer slot games this October, Foxwoods made out better: us$ 7,341 per game compared to us$ 6,905 in October 2008, and a us$ 4 increase in the win per game per day.
