Wales has become the first UK nation to provide nationwide access to a new free online NHS (National Health Service) programme supporting people affected by gambling harms.

The programme, Space from Gambling Harms, is delivered through the SilverCloud platform and can be accessed on phones, tablets, or computers without a GP referral.

The 12-week course is part of the newly launched All-Wales Gambling Treatment Service, which began operating in April alongside a 24-hour helpline for individuals and families affected by gambling.

Built around cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and motivational enhancement therapy, the programme aims to help users examine their gambling behaviour, build coping strategies, strengthen confidence, and regain control.

Jodie Morgan, Clinical Operational Manager at Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board, which oversees the service and helpline for NHS Wales, said improving access to support was central to the programme’s design.

Space from Gambling Harms offers people another way to access confidential, evidence-based support at a time that suits them, and we will be supporting patients across Wales to access the programme alongside our wider treatment offer.”

The course is open to anyone in Wales aged 18 and over through self-referral. Participants are encouraged to spend around 20 minutes per session, three times a week, working through the material.

Once enrolled, users are assigned an NHS-trained supporter who provides guidance and encouragement throughout the programme.

Fionnuala Clayton, Project Manager for NHS Wales’ online CBT service, said the platform was designed to reduce barriers to mental health support. “This programme gives people the opportunity to reflect on their habits, gain the skills and confidence to control their gambling, and get their lives back on track," Clayton added.

The Space from Gambling Harms programme is one of 28 mental health and wellbeing courses available on SilverCloud, which is managed by Powys Teaching Health Board. Other programmes cover conditions such as anxiety, stress, depression and sleep difficulties and are available to people aged 16 and over in Wales.

Health data suggests tens of thousands of people in Wales are affected by gambling harms each year.

Anyone affected by gambling harms can contact the 24/7 helpline on 0808 281 9265 for immediate support and advice. Professionals and individuals can also make referrals to the Gambling Treatment Service by calling 03000 859464 or emailing [email protected].

In addition, self-referrals to the SilverCloud Space from the Gambling Harms programme can be made online at nhswales.silvercloudhealth.com/signup/.
