Virginia sports betting revenue posts strong annual gain in December

Virginia sports betting revenue reached $79.3 million in December 2025, trailing the $95.3 million record set one month earlier while still exceeding prior-year levels.

Adjusted gross sports betting revenue for the month increased 80.6% year over year, according to data released by the Virginia Lottery. Despite the annual increase, the December total was 16.8% below the record monthly result reported in November 2025.

Online wagering drives results

Online sportsbooks generated $79.2 million of total adjusted gross revenue in December. Retail sportsbooks accounted for just $115,064 during the month.

The state does not release operator-level data. Virginia has 14 licensed mobile sports betting operators and three casinos approved to offer sports wagering.

Handle declines month over month

Total sports betting handle in December reached $710.9 million. The figure was 2.6% lower than December 2024 and 10.4% below November 2025. The state’s handle record remains $831.6 million, set in October 2025.

Online wagers totaled $705.3 million for the month. Retail sportsbook locations recorded $5.7 million in bets.

Payouts, deductions, and tax allocations

Players received $627.5 million in payouts from sports betting activity in December. The Virginia Lottery also reported $4.1 million in other deductions during the month. No allowance bonuses or promotional deductions were listed.

Sports betting operators paid $11.9 million in taxes in December, an increase of 81% compared with the same month in 2025. Of that amount, $11.6 million was allocated to the state’s General Fund, while $298,338 was directed to the Problem Gambling Treatment and Support Fund.
