Construction on the Live! Petersburg Casino Resort is moving forward, and with it comes an early opportunity for those looking to join the gaming industry. The resort, in partnership with Richard Bland College, has launched a dealer training program ahead of its opening.
The 12-week course begins September 8 at 3333 Crater Road, Suite 4A, in Pinehill Plaza. Brian Dwaileebe, director for table games, said the program has already attracted strong interest. “We have hundreds who are enrolled right now,” he noted.
To introduce the program, open houses are being held through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Prospective students can also purchase a $50 blackjack kit that includes a dealing shoe, chips, cards, and a layout for practice at home.
“They get a dealing shoe, two stacks of chips, two decks of cards and layout for home that they can use on a kitchen table or dining room table to practice with family,” Dwaileebe explained.
The curriculum will start with blackjack before expanding to other table games. Classes are scheduled Monday through Thursday, with sessions offered in the morning, afternoon, and evening to accommodate different schedules. Participants are expected to refresh their math skills in preparation for a basic math test.
“It’s a very hands-on learning experience. It’s not like your traditional college course where you go and you have to read books and do homework,” Dwaileebe said. Between 150 and 175 dealer positions will be available, with average annual earnings, including tips, estimated at around $60,000.
Graduates who secure a role at the resort could step directly into one of these jobs, but the certification is designed to be portable across the wider gaming industry. “If you are looking into entering this hospitality or casino industry, this is a good first step,” said Penny Parayo, the general manager of the casino.
The temporary Live! Petersburg facility is expected to open later this year, with the permanent resort scheduled for completion in 2027. Developers project that the full property will generate nearly $3 billion in revenue for the region and create about 7,500 jobs. “It’s a great and exciting time to be part of it as we open live! Virginia here in Petersburg,” Parayo added.
