Maryland's August casino revenue drops 4.7% YoY, hits second-lowest in 2023 at $161.4 million

Maryland's six casinos collectively generated $161.39 million in revenue from slot machines and table games in August 2023. This figure reflects a decrease of nearly $8 million or a 4.7% drop compared to August 2022 and a 7.3% decline from July's revenue of $174.32 million.

August marked the second weakest month of the year in terms of casino revenue, trailing only February.

Here's a breakdown of the monthly revenue figures for 2023, as reported by PlayUSA:

  • January: $167.27 million
  • February: $157.06 million
  • March: $176.52 million
  • April: $174.74 million
  • May: $169.40 million
  • June: $163.72 million
  • July: $174.32 million
  • August: $161.4 million

According to the Maryland Lottery and Gaming August 2023 report, casino gaming contributions to the state totaled $68.12 million marking a decrease of $2,753,104 or -3.9% compared to August last year. This figure also represents a nearly 7% monthly drop from the $73.2 million collected in July.

Contributions to the Education Trust Fund in August 2023 amounted to $49,130,230, reflecting a decrease of $2,365,932 (-4.6%) compared to the same month in 2022. It's important to note that casino gaming revenues also support the communities and jurisdictions where the casinos are situated, Maryland's horse racing industry, and small, minority- and women-owned businesses.

Maryland's six privately owned casinos offer a variety of slot machines and table games. MGM National Harbor maintained its position as the leading casino in Maryland, generating over $68 million in revenue. Live! Casino & Hotel, boasting the state's largest gaming floor, secured the second spot.

Here are the gaming revenue totals for August 2023 at each establishment:

  • MGM National Harbor (2,301 slot machines, 209 table games): $68.37 million which marks a decrease of $3.43 million (-4.8%) from August 2022
  • Live! Casino & Hotel (3,853 slot machines, 179 table games): $55 million, a decrease of $1.7 million (-3.1%) from August 2022
  • Horseshoe Casino (1,410 slot machines, 122 table games): $15.4 million, a decrease of $1.8 million (-10.6%) from August 2022
  • Ocean Downs Casino (866 slot machines, 19 table games): $10 million, a decrease of $469,073 (-4.5%) from August 2022
  • Hollywood Casino (671 slot machines, 19 table games): $7.1 million, a decrease of $88,799 (-1.2%) from August 2022
  • Rocky Gap Casino (621 slot machines, 16 table games): $5.37 million, a decrease of $398,730 (-6.9%) from August 2022
