BtoBet, Aspire Global's online sports betting provider, released its latest industry report, the "UK Betting Focus." The report analyzes the growth of online gambling in the United Kingdom in the period between 2020 and 2021, particularly sports betting, which is presented as the second most popular vertical at 40% after lottery (61%), according to a survey by YouGov.
In regards to online sports betting, BtoBet's report indicates that it continues to "develop at a significant rate year after year," emphasizing betting related to soccer, which "accounts for approximately 46.1% of the country's total gambling market".
Based on data from the United Kingdom Gambling Commission (UKGC), the report indicates that between April and March of those years, respectively, £6.9 billion ($8.674 billion) were generated in gross revenues through online channels in the casino, betting, and bingo sectors.
According to the report, online casino games comprise the largest share of the market with £4,000 million ($5,028 million) in gross revenues, of which £2,900 million ($3,646 million) are related to slots.
Meanwhile, gross revenues from online sports betting amounted to £2.6 billion ($ 3,269 million), with soccer at £1.2 billion ($ 1,508 million), and horse betting at £856 million ($ 1,076 million), contributing the most to the total. In regards to online bingo, gross revenues totaled £189 million ($237 million).
As for the National Lottery, the report states that, according to figures from the Gambling Commission, the sector "generated the highest annual sales since the agency first began compiling statistics." Lottery ticket sales reached £8.4 billion ($10.559 billion), of which £4.9 billion ($6.158 billion), about 58%, were returned as prizes.
