Detroit's casinos report $110.4M revenue for Sept., still below prepandemic figures

The Michigan Gaming Control Board released the numbers for last month, which show that figures are 25% up year-over-year, but 2% below pre-pandemic September 2019's report. Table games and slots generated $106.9 million in revenue, down 4.7 from August, whole retail sports betting brought in $3.5 million.

The Michigan Gaming Control Board released Tuesday the report on the numbers for Detroit’s three casinos during September, which have brought in $110.4 million in revenue, accounting for a 25% increase in a year-over-year comparison; and a 2% decrease compared to September 2019.

For the month, table games and slots generated $106.9 million in revenue, down 4.7% from August, while retail sports betting brought in $3.5 million. 


MotorCity Casino

Overall, MGM Grand Detroit had 45% of the market share, while MotorCity Casino Hotel had 34% and Greektown Casino had 21%. Collectively, the three casinos paid $8.7 million in gaming taxes to the state, up from $7.1 million in September 2020. They submitted $16.8 million in wagering taxes and development agreement payments to the city last month. 


MGM Grand Detroit

MGM generated $48.4 million in gaming revenues last month, MotorCity reported $36.5 million and Greektown reported $22 million. 


Greektown Casino

Retail sports betting qualified adjusted gross receipts (QAGR) rose 109.8% compared with August 2021. September QAGR results by casino were:

  • MGM, $1,341,262
  • MotorCity, $1,237,488 
  • Greektown, $883,813

The casinos reported a total handle of $32,528,487, and total gross receipts were $3,459,841; and paid $130,885 in retail sports betting taxes to the State of Michigan and reported submitting $159,970 in taxes to the City of Detroit. 

Through September 30, aggregate retail sports betting qualified adjusted gross receipts were:

  • MGM, $5,740,373
  • MotorCity, $6,693,261
  • Greektown, $6,433,442
