Laliberté's road to success with Cirque du Soleil came after quitting college and losing his job at a power plant. Supporting himself on unemployment insurance, he helped organize a summer fair with some friends in Canada. Their tours and fairs evolved and in 1983, the government of Quebec gave the group a $1.5 million grant to host a production the following year as part of Quebec's 450th anniversary; "Le Grand Tour du Cirque du Soleil". In 1984, Laliberté founded Cirque du Soleil, a Canadian circus company whose shows have since been seen by more than 90 million people worldwide.
Laliberté has also had huge success in the world of poker. In April 2007, Laliberté finished fourth in the World Poker Tour Season Five event at Bellagio in Las Vegas. Laliberté also played on GSN's High Staker Poker Season 4 show and took part in Poker After Dark season 4. He was also known for frequenting the highest stakes games on Full Tilt Poker.
In 2011, Laliberté announced the Big One, a $1 million dollar buy-in tournament which was featured at the 2012 World Series of Poker. That’s a steep price for players to pay every year, so the Big One is held every other year, while the ONE DROP High Roller Event fills in the alternating years and the Little One, a $1,111 buy-in tourney, is held every year. Part of the prizepool was donated to Laliberté's philanthropic organization One Drop Foundation. The organization's goal is to make sure everyone in the world has clean water. The tournament raised $5,333,328 for the One Drop foundation.
