A California judge has ordered casino mogul Steve Wynn to pay USD 422,380 in legal fees and costs to the Wall Street hedge fund manager Wynn sued for defamation.

Last week District Judge William H. Orrick reduced the amount Chanos requested — $590,699 — saying he didn't provide materials justifying extremely high hourly-rates for paralegals and the large number of attorney hours.

A Wynn spokesman declined to comment.

Orrick dismissed Wynn's case in March under California's anti-SLAPP statute that aims to stop lawsuits stifling free speech. The judge said statements by Chanos about Wynn and Wynn Resorts Ltd. at a UC Berkeley academic conference were not defamatory.

Wynn backed a state law this year aimed at weakening Nevada's anti-SLAPP provisions. Lawmakers passed a watered-down version retaining most of the same protections.
