(US).- California State Senator Jose Luis Correa has introduced legislation that would see the western state legalise intra-state online poker and establish a regulatory framework for the licensing of iGaming operators by the California Gambling Control Commission.

The proposed measure, which is known as Senate Bill 678, is the second pending piece of legislation concerning online poker in California following the introduction of Senate Bill 51 from fellow Democrat California State Senator Roderick Wright late last year.

The proposal from the suburban Los Angeles representative would insert a chapter into Division Eight of the governing Business and Professions Code and will now be considered in committee before moving on to the Democrat-controlled California State Senate where it will be required to acquire a majority of votes.
“The Gambling Control Act provides for the licensure of certain individuals and establishments that conduct controlled games as defined and for the regulation of these gambling activities by the California Gambling Control Commission,” reads the introduction of Senate Bill 678.

“The Department of Justice has related investigatory and enforcement duties under the act. Any violation of these provisions is punishable as a misdemeanour as specified. “This bill would authorise the operation of Internet poker websites within the borders of this state. The bill would require the Commission to establish a regulatory framework for the licensure of eligible entities and the operation of Internet poker websites within the borders of the state.”
