China, the Philippines collaborate to repatriate 160 Chinese nationals involved in offshore gambling

Chinese and Philippine law enforcement departments have joined forces to repatriate over 160 Chinese nationals involved in offshore gambling in the Philippines. The Chinese Embassy in the Philippines stated that the move showcases the commitment of both countries to combat crime, including fraud and kidnapping, prevalent within the offshore gambling industry.

Highlighting China's stringent stance on gambling, the embassy reiterated that all forms of gambling, including online gambling and Chinese citizens gambling abroad, are prohibited under the country's law. Moreover, operating casinos overseas and soliciting Chinese citizens to gamble are strictly forbidden.

The Chinese Embassy in the Philippines said it will continue to strengthen practical law enforcement cooperation with the Philippines, supporting the country in resolving the issues related to the offshore gambling industry "as soon as possible."

The recent repatriation effort follows a similar operation on February 22, where over 40 Chinese nationals engaged in offshore gambling were sent back to China through the joint efforts of Chinese and Philippine law enforcement agencies. 

Since 2023, multiple joint law enforcement operations spearheaded by the Philippine Presidential Anti-Organized Crime Commission and other agencies have resulted in the arrest of several suspects involved in illegal offshore gambling activities. With the active assistance of the Chinese Embassy, successive repatriations have been carried out in response to requests from the Philippine authorities.

The frequency of telecom fraud cases related to false investment and financial management in China since 2023 has raised public concern, prompting collaborative efforts between China and Southeast Asian countries to combat gambling fraud and related crimes. Joint special operations have been initiated to safeguard the public from these fraudulent activities.

In addition to the cooperation between China and the Philippines, a special joint operation involving China, Thailand, Myanmar, and Laos has been launched to combat cross-border telecommunications fraud and online gambling crimes, as reported by media outlets.
