his conference gathers both the government and the industry, with the aim to bring a strategic vision of the Spanish market, specially focused in those operators that wish to enter in such market as well as the new opportunities it brings.
In this context, Fernando Ors, Director of Business Development of Codere, participated in the session “Is Spain prepared for an online regulated market?” together with Sacha Michaud, Director of Betfair Iberia.
Ors opened its speech bringing information about Internet consumers’ trends and the behavior of Internet users with regards to e-commerce. He revealed that gambling and betting are the fourth activity in volume of e-commerce operation in Spain and the first one considering operations from Spain to foreign countries. Online gaming represents the 4.4% of the total gaming activity worldwide and it is estimated that in 2012 it will represent the 6.7%.
With regards to Spain, Fernando Ors made a description of the first months of activity of Victoria, the brand with which it operates the Joint venture between Codere and William Hill, which is the only one that is present in both Autonomous Communities with legislation on sportbooks: Madrid and the Basque Country. He remarked the positive feedback from this activity among Spanish consumers.
After revising the different trends in the online regulation in other countries, he released a proposal for the development of a Spanish regulation on remote gambling based in four points: “is better a regulation that a prohibition, adequate tax system (on operations and advertising), measures of advertising self-control and protection measures that implement the best practices”.
The Technical Secretary of the Minister of Interior, María Angeles Gonzáles, participated in the program of conferences, as well as representatives of the gaming areas of the governments of Madrid Council, Castilla and León, the Community of Valencia and Malta, the European Casino Association, the Spanish Poker Association, the Remote Gambling Association, important companies of the sector and other operators that, among other issues, debate on Internet poker in Spain, the challenges of compliance and online gaming liberalization in the Spanish market from a Pan-European perspective.
