Brazil’s centralized self-exclusion platform for betting has recorded 462,831 users within four months of its launch, according to data from the Prizes and Betting Secretariat of the Ministry of Treasury.

The system, which went live on December 10, 2025, allows individuals to block access to all authorized sportsbooks for a chosen period. Users must log in through a Gov.br account, select a duration, and accept the terms. The minimum blocking period is one month.

Most users are choosing long-term restrictions. Data shows 69.86% opted for an indefinite block, while 20.75% selected one year. Shorter periods saw limited uptake, with three months at 3.06%, six months at 2.92%, one month at 2.8%, and nine months at 0.61%.

Loss of control associated with mental health accounted for 39.87% of responses. Another 19.57% said they aimed to prevent misuse of personal data. Financial difficulties were reported by 11.44%, while 13.68% described the decision as voluntary. A further 14.07% did not disclose a reason, and 1.36% cited recommendations from health professionals.

Once activated, the block applies across all licensed platforms. Revocation is restricted and cannot occur before the selected period ends. For indefinite exclusions, reversal is only allowed after 12 months under established procedures.

The system was introduced as concerns over rising gambling-related debt intensified. President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva recently said that, if it were up to him, he would “close the bets,” but acknowledged that such a measure would require congressional debate and has a low chance of approval.

Users experiencing negative impacts are advised to seek support through public health services, including Basic Health Units and Psychosocial Care Centers, or consult professionals.
