The growing lack of trust in the Norwegian iGaming affiliates

For years, Norwegian players relied on iGaming affiliate websites to navigate the complicated world of online betting and casinos. These platforms compare betting sites, review casinos, and recommend the most reputable international operators. However, in recent years, trust in Norwegian iGaming affiliates has begun to decline.

As authorities intensified efforts to protect the national gambling monopoly, many well-known international gambling companies stopped working with affiliate companies. When these established brands disappeared from affiliate rankings and recommendation lists, many users began to question whether these sites were still providing objective and reliable information.

A government crackdown on international operators

In recent years, Norwegian authorities have taken a far more aggressive approach to enforcing the gambling monopoly. The Norwegian Gambling Authority (Lotteritilsynet) has intensified investigations into unlicensed operators, issuing warnings, and potentially implementing large fines. Several well-known international brands were directly affected by this crackdown.

The government also introduced new legislative tools to strengthen enforcement. Under updated gambling regulations, operators violating the rules may face significant financial penalties that can reach up to 10% of their turnover.

In practice, the strategy has been relatively effective. Rather than risk fines, many international companies chose to stop actively targeting Norwegian customers. The disappearance of these major operators dramatically changed the landscape of the Norwegian online gambling ecosystem.

Affiliates caught in the middle

The crackdown did not only affect operators, it also had a major impact on iGaming affiliates. Affiliate websites depend on partnerships with online bookmakers to generate revenue. They earn commissions when users click referral links and register with recommended operators.

When regulators forced major operators to leave the Norwegian market, many affiliates suddenly lost partnerships with some of the most recognizable brands in the industry.

For many Norwegian players, affiliate websites once served as a guide to the most trusted international betting platforms. Large operators had built global reputations over decades and were widely considered reliable. When these brands suddenly vanished from affiliate rankings, users noticed.

In some cases, affiliates replaced the well-known operators with smaller or lesser-known gambling sites that were still willing to operate in grey markets. From the user’s perspective, this raised concerns about whether these sites were truly the best options or simply the only partners still available.

The result has been a growing skepticism among players. If trusted global companies are missing from the recommendations, many users begin to question the credibility of the lists themselves.

Affiliate marketing relies heavily on trust. Visitors expect that comparison websites will provide honest reviews and highlight the safest and most reputable platforms.

However, the Norwegian regulatory crackdown has created a situation where affiliates may no longer be able to recommend the most established operators, even if they believe those brands are the best choices for players.

This creates a reputation problem for the affiliate industry.

However, despite the current challenges, the Norwegian iGaming affiliate sector is unlikely to disappear entirely. Demand for online gambling information remains strong, and many Norwegian players still search for alternative platforms outside the state monopoly.

Some industry organizations have argued that Norway should move toward a licensing system similar to other European countries, where private operators can legally enter the market under strict regulation. Such a model could restore transparency by allowing affiliates to recommend licensed operators openly rather than navigating a grey market.

As for now, affiliates find themselves caught between regulatory pressure and user expectations. While the government’s crackdown may have succeeded in pushing international operators away from Norway, it has also reshaped the affiliate landscape, and potentially weakened the trust that once made these websites valuable sources of information.
