Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker has disclosed $1.4 million in blackjack winnings on his 2024 tax returns, released this week. His campaign confirmed that the earnings came from a single trip to Las Vegas last year.
During a briefing in Chicago, Pritzker described the gambling outcome during a vacation with his wife, MK Pritzker, and friends. “I was incredibly lucky,” he said.
He added: “Anybody who’s played cards in a casino knows that you often play for too long, and lose whatever it is that you won. I was fortunate enough to have to leave before that happened.”
He did not specify how much he wagered per hand, whether he played on the main floor or at a private high-limit table, or how the win occurred during his stay, according to The New York Times.
Professional gambler Richard W. Munchkin said Pritzker’s disclosed winnings were feasible given common betting limits in Nevada’s gaming market, where major casinos allow wagers as high as $25,000 per hand and private high-roller tables reach $100,000 or more.
“There are many high-rollers in Las Vegas that have wins and losses much higher than that,” Munchkin said in the New York Times report. He also noted surprise that Pritzker declared the income: “My immediate reaction was, ‘Oh my God, someone actually declared their gambling winnings.’”
A spokesperson for Pritzker’s campaign, Alex Gough, said the governor plans to donate the money to charity, though he did not specify the recipient or timeline.
Pritzker has played a role in the legislative developments affecting Illinois’ gambling sector, which includes 17 state-regulated casinos under the Illinois Gaming Board. He has previously signed gambling legislation in the state and has encouraged regulated gaming.
“We have some really lovely places to go,” Pritzker said when referring to Illinois casinos during the same press interaction where he addressed his blackjack winnings.
The governor is also known as a long-time card player and co-founded the Chicago Poker Challenge, a fundraising event that supports the Illinois Holocaust Museum and Education Center.
The governor, heir to the Hyatt Hotels business family, has a net worth of $3.9 billion. His 2024 tax return reported $10.7 million in adjusted gross income, primarily from trusts that distribute annual earnings. Pritzker does not accept a salary as governor. The filing showed he and his wife paid $1.6 million in federal taxes on taxable income of $5.87 million and made $3.3 million in personal charitable donations.
Pritzker is serving his second term and has stated he intends to seek a third term in 2026. He has been discussed as a potential 2028 presidential contender and was previously considered as a vice-presidential option for Kamala Harris.
In recent months, his public statements have included criticism of immigration enforcement actions by former President Donald Trump, including the potential deployment of National Guard troops in Chicago.
