The Nebraska Racing and Gaming Commission has granted licensing approval for Lake Mac Casino Resort & Racetrack in Ogallala, setting the stage for its grand opening today, Tuesday, August 19. The property, operated by Elite Casino Resorts in partnership with Hastings Exposition and Racing, brings both casino gaming and live Quarter Horse racing to western Nebraska.

The temporary venue, located just off I-80, will feature more than 300 slot machines and electronic table games, a 5/8-mile Quarter Horse racetrack, retail and kiosk-based sports betting through ELITE Sportsbook, a simulcast wagering area, and the Draft Day Sports Lounge.

“This is an exciting milestone for Elite Casino Resorts, Keith County and the community of Ogallala,” said Dan Kehl, CEO of Elite Casino Resorts. “We’re ready to open the doors and welcome Governor Jim Pillen, local leaders, and guests to an outstanding entertainment experience at Lake Mac Casino.”

Opening day festivities begin with gates opening at 1 p.m. MDT, followed by a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 2 p.m. The first Quarter Horse race is scheduled for 3 p.m., and the casino will open its doors shortly after, at approximately 4 p.m.

The celebration will include free grand opening t-shirts for the first 1,000 visitors, a new member signup promotion, and a Bring A Friend bonus. Guests will be treated to a complimentary meal catered by Ole’s Big Game Steakhouse & Lounge from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m., alongside live music by Drew Phillips from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Dave Lerbakken from 8:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m.

The launch marks the return of Quarter Horse racing to Nebraska after years of absence. “This return of Quarter Horse racing to Nebraska is a major win for the local and agricultural economy in this area,” said Cynthia Smith, Director of Racing.

Most importantly, this boosts the Nebraska Quarter Horse breeders and trainers who now have more opportunities closer to home. We all should be excited about what the future holds for the industry of running Quarter Horses in Nebraska in the coming years.”

While the current facility is considered temporary, Elite Casino Resorts has announced plans for future expansion into a full resort destination. The long-term vision includes a larger casino floor, hotel accommodations with indoor and outdoor pools, Ruthie’s Steak & Seafood restaurant, additional dining options, and RV facilities.
