Maine’s Gambling Control Unit (GCU) on Monday issued a warning to residents about illegal online casino-style gambling platforms that are targeting users in the state, despite being strictly prohibited under current laws.
While online sports betting, fantasy contests, and advance deposit wagering are legal and regulated in Maine, real-money online casino games such as slots, blackjack, and roulette remain banned.
“Numerous unregulated entities continue to target Maine residents, offering iGaming opportunities,” the GCU said in its statement. “These operations are based in other states or countries and often include sites that appear legitimate but lack any regulatory oversight in Maine.”
The regulator clarified that it has not licensed any online casino, iGaming, or sweepstakes platform. Many of the illegal operations include so-called “sweepstakes” or “social casino” sites that use dual-currency systems or offer material prizes, coin-based payouts, or gift cards in place of cash.
Consumers who use unlicensed gambling platforms do so at their own risk, as the Gambling Control Unit (GCU) cannot assist with disputes over winnings or account issues arising from illegal iGaming, the agency said.
By contrast, legal operators offering fantasy contests, advance deposit wagering, and sports betting are subject to scrutiny and consumer protection regulations overseen by the GCU.
Officials also encouraged residents struggling with gambling-related issues to access support services through the Gambling Control Unit’s website or through partners, including the Maine Department of Health and Human Services and the Maine CDC.
