Spain: Number of online gamblers exceeded 1.6 million in 2023

The Directorate General for the Regulation of Gambling (DGOJ), the regulatory body of the online sector in Spain, presented its new Online Gambler Report, which analyzes the profile and the main patterns of Spanish gamblers, and how they behaved during 2023.

According to the study, the number of active players is 1,637,831, a figure that represents a growth of 2.69% compared to 2022. Of this total number of gamblers, 83.38% are men and 16.62% are women. In terms of age, 85.79% of active players are between 18 and 45 years old.

In terms of active players per month, the average is almost 790,000, and the average time of activity is almost six months. The report reveals that 21.40% of players remain active for one month or less and that during 2023 a total of 345,616 new players registered.

Furthermore, the report shows that 55% of players play a single segment and that Betting is the vertical in which there is the largest number of players, with more than 1,250,000 players. This figure represents 38%, while 0.9% choose bingo, 11.8% casino, and just under 5% poker. The year-on-year variation was -2.04% in betting; 21.24% in casino; and 7.69% in poker.

In terms of spending, the average per active player is EUR 736 ($800), equivalent to EUR 60 ($65) per month or just over EUR 14 ($15) per week. The document also details that the average net expenditure for men was EUR 783 ($852) per year, while for women it was EUR 500 ($544).

Young people between the ages of 18 and 25 spend the least, at EUR 333 ($362) per year, less than half the average. The 46-55 age group spends the most on online games with an annual average of EUR 1,165 ($1,268), well above average. The second highest spending group is the 36-45 age group and the third highest is the 56-65 age group, with spending close to EUR 1,000 ($1,088).

Lastly, in terms of prizes, the report shows that 18.93% of players win net prizes; and for 5% of participants, the net prize for the year exceeds EUR 580 ($631). 35% have a net expenditure in the year of more than EUR 170 ($185).
