Maryland lottery and gaming chief to retire
Appointed by Gov. Larry Hogan in 2015 though not confirmed until nearly two years later, Medenica has overseen revenue and profit records for the lottery. The current fiscal year, which ends June 30, is expected to set another all-time record, the agency said.
“I feel incredibly fortunate for the many unique and wonderful experiences I have been afforded during my career,” Medenica said in a statement. “The lottery business is like no other. Where else can you raise important revenue for the state and its citizens -- while still having so much fun? I leave here with mixed emotions, but look forward to the next phase of my life.”
Medenica has also managed lotteries in New York and New Jersey.
His confirmation vote to head the Maryland Lottery was held up due to concerns over the awarding of an eight-year contract with Scientific Games to operate the lottery.
