(US).- Florida lawmakers are rejecting a plan to bring three major casinos to the Miami area. The proposal is most likely doomed for the year after a House panel on Friday postponed their vote on it. It's not expected to be considered again during the session.
The bill would have granted casino licenses to major developers that have pledged to spend at least us$ 2 billion on resorts.
The legislation has been one of the most heavily lobbied bills of the 2012 session. Backers said it would create tens of thousands of jobs at. But opponents argued it would take business from resorts and dog tracks while damaging the state's family-friendly brand.
Malaysian gambling company Genting has invested nearly a half-billion dollars in Miami real estate and says it won't give up on efforts to build a casino there.
