“Applying for a license is always a complicated process and I am therefore very happy that PokerStars has successfully met all the necessary criteria to obtain an activity license in Estonia,” said Tomas Larsson, PokerStars' Baltics Country Manager.
Estonia may be one of the smallest countries in the EU but it has an established poker community, as witnessed by the recent European Poker Tour event in the nation's capital Tallinn which attracted 420 players and was won by Kevin Stani. “In addition to Estonia having excellent players and tournament organisers, Tallinn is also a new and truly attractive destination for many top players.” Larsson added.
PokerStars has been busy in Estonia this past year, promoting a number of local sporting and cultural activities including a sponsorship agreement with the Estonian national volleyball team that made it to the finals of the European Championships.
Estonia joins France and Italy as countries that have now awarded PokerStars licences to operate legally inside their territory. The exact date of the PokerStars Estonian launch is yet to be revealed.
