The Greek government has raised the Gross Gaming Revenue duty for all online gambling companies to 35% effective by January 2017.

With Greece struggling to meet the loan sanctions by the EU the country needs to meet a surplus of 3.5% of its current national budget, with a black hole of €1.5 billion raising taxes is the only way the government believe.

Currently online gambling operators work on a sliding scale of between 30-35% of gambling duty, now it will be fixed for all at 35% including the state run OPAP.

Greece has 24 licensed online gambling operators in the country and all were expecting the rise on tax so it is unlikely any will pull their businesses out of Greece.

With the increase coming into effect at the start of next year the government believe they can raise some €54 million from online gambling.
