(UK).- The Camelot Group, operator of The National Lottery in the UK, has announced its financial results for the six months to September 24 showing a 19.9 % year-on-year increase in total sales to us$ 4.98 billion.

The operator declared that it has now contributed over us$ 42 billion to good causes across the UK since launching The National Lottery in 1994 while paying out in excess of us$ 62.3 billion in prize monies to players.

Camelot stated that its performance underlined the ‘ongoing effectiveness’ of its ‘strategy for long-term and responsible growth’ that hopes to encourage ‘many people to play but to each spend relatively little’.

It revealed that this approach has seen it boost sales of The National Lottery by over 20 % since gaining a second lottery license in 2002 with player numbers have improved by 5%:
“However, The National Lottery is ranked just 60th in terms of per capita spend despite being the seventh largest lottery in the world in terms of sales, which is clear evidence of Camelot’s ongoing commitment to being a responsible operator,” read a statement from Camelot.

This rise in sales helped to drive direct returns to Camelot’s charitable causes over the half-year from us$ 1.22 billion to us$ 1.43 billion, which is an increase of us$ 208 million over the same period last year. The operator proclaimed that this funding has seen more than 370,000 individual awards made across the UK, which is equivalent to 120 lottery grants for every postcode district.

In addition, Camelot paid out a record us$ 2.49 billion in prize money during the half-year, which means that it has now created in excess of 2,700 lottery millionaires and multi-millionaires since 1994, including the record us$ 250.8 million paid out to Colin and Chris Weir in August.

“We’ve made an extremely positive start to the 2011/12 financial year, raising a record amount for good causes and paying out record sums in prize money to our players, which is what The National Lottery is all about,” said Dianne Thompson, CEO for Camelot. “But this success isn’t an overnight phenomenon. It’s the result of our proven strategy for responsible growth that has seen our sales rise steadily and our player numbers increase over the long-term by encouraging many people to play but to spend relatively small amounts.

“Our continued achievements in the face of a challenging economic climate and a worldwide trend of lower lottery sales growth have reinforced our position as one of the world’s leading lottery operators. However, we never take success for granted and are determined to build on the tremendous performance of the last six months to make sure that we continue to raise as much money as possible for good causes and create even more winners.”
