Maverick Gaming will close Washington's Silver Dollar Mill Creek Casino in Bothell and Crazy Moose Mountlake Casino in Mountlake Terrace on July 31, resulting in the layoff of 123 employees, according to Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) filings.
The closures will impact 41 employees at Silver Dollar Mill Creek Casino and 82 workers at Crazy Moose Mountlake Casino, The Seattle Times reported. Positions affected by the layoffs include table game dealers, cashiers, bartenders and security specialists.
The announcement follows Maverick Gaming’s bankruptcy filing in July last year, which led to the closure of four other cardrooms in the Seattle area: Dragon Tiger Casino in Mountlake Terrace, Palace Casino in Lakewood, Silver Dollar Casino in Renton and Roman Casino in Seattle.
Under Washington law, commercial cardrooms are permitted to operate table games, while bars and taverns may offer pull-tab gambling. Native American tribal casinos hold exclusive rights to operate slot machines and offer sports betting in the state.
Maverick first notified the Washington State Employment Security Department on Sept. 26 about plans to permanently close both casinos, initially setting a Dec. 2 shutdown date, according to HR director Christine Wisniewski.
However, the closures were postponed as the company pursued a potential sale of the properties during ongoing bankruptcy proceedings.
“The site did not ultimately close at that time because, as part of an ongoing bankruptcy proceeding, Maverick Washington LLC was actively negotiating a potential sale of the Site to a buyer,” the notice stated.
