Clark County issues permit for Eastside Cannery hotel tower implosion

Clark County has approved a demolition permit for the implosion of the Eastside Cannery hotel tower.

The county’s Building Department on Feb. 24 issued a $487,210 commercial demolition implosion permit for the 16-story structure, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported. The permit names Controlled Demolition Inc. as the contractor overseeing the project.

According to its website, Controlled Demolition Inc. has carried out the demolition of numerous hotels, office buildings, nuclear facilities, and sports venues nationwide. In Las Vegas, the company served as the explosives subcontractor for the 2024 implosion of the Tropicana Las Vegas.

The Eastside Cannery, located on Boulder Highway at Harmon Avenue in the eastern Las Vegas Valley, has remained closed since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Crews have recently been dismantling portions of the property, though the hotel tower — now gutted and stripped of its windows — remains standing.

Before its closure, the property featured more than 300 hotel rooms, a 64,000-square-foot casino floor, multiple bars and restaurants, a 250-seat entertainment lounge, and 20,000 square feet of meeting and ballroom space.

Owner Boyd Gaming said the tower is scheduled to be imploded at 2 a.m. Thursday. The 29.5-acre site is expected to be sold for residential redevelopment following the demolition.

Unlike many high-profile casino implosions in Las Vegas that draw crowds and fireworks displays, the Eastside Cannery demolition will not be open to the public. There will also be no designated viewing areas for spectators, according to Boyd spokesman David Strow.
