Circa Sports’ pro football contest, Circa Survivor, has grown into the largest sports betting contest in the world, boasting a record-setting $14.2 million prize in 2024 and $21 million already guaranteed for 2025. But beyond the headline figure, Circa Survivor is a 20-week gauntlet of strategy, heartbreak, and high-stakes drama. That’s exactly what docuseries Circa Survivor: The Quest for $14.2 Million delivers in its second season, taking viewers behind the scenes and uncovering the stories behind the bets.

Airing on VSiN, The Sports Betting Network, the docuseries pulls back the curtain on the world’s biggest legal sports betting showdown, following everyone from seasoned sharps to first-time hopefuls as they chase a life-changing, winner-take-all payout. With celebrity cameos, shocking upsets, and the guaranteed $14.2 million on the line, Season 2 promises more twists, more tension, and even bigger personalities.

Yogonet spoke with Mike Palm, VP of Operations at Circa Sports; Stephan Shelanski, Producer and Director at Longball Productions; and Bill Adee, CEO of VSiN, about the contest’s meteoric rise, the making of the series, and why this year’s edition could be the most thrilling yet.

Circa Survivor has become the largest legal sports betting contest in the world. What do you think has made it resonate so deeply with the betting community?

Mike Palm: The beauty of the Circa Survivor format is that it seems so simple: just pick one winner each week – no point spread. How hard can that be? With the rapid growth of the contest and the prize now into 8 figures, the allure of becoming an instant millionaire has helped to fuel the frenzy.

We introduced the contests to drive people to visit our properties on the belief that they would have an incredible experience and continue to come back. We guaranteed $1.5 million in the first year of the Circa Million and $1 million in the first year of Circa Survivor.

This year, we may have prize pools that combined exceed $25 million. The trajectory of growth is something we never imagined.

VSiN has grown into a national media force in betting. How does a series like Circa Survivor: The Quest for $14.2 Million fit into your broader content strategy? How important is original content like this for distinguishing VSiN in the sports media space?

Bill Adee: As the first multi-platform network dedicated exclusively to sports betting content, VSiN is focused on delivering the news, insights, and analysis sports fans need to inform their wagering decisions. And while credible, actionable content is at the center of everything we do, VSiN wouldn't have the passionate, loyal fanbase it does without the entertainment factor - and this docuseries really delivers on that front.

Circa Survivor: The Quest for $14.2M takes viewers right into the action, capturing the excitement, drama, and fun of this high-stakes contest. Last year's season was the first time we'd aired content like this, but VSiN fans can't get enough of our contest coverage, so we were thrilled to bring the docuseries back for another season.

Season 1 of Circa Survivor drew a loyal audience. What did you learn from that season that shaped how you approached Season 2?

Stephan Shelanski: We weren't quite sure what we had while making Season 1. We had a vision for what the series could be, but it wasn't until we edited the episodes that we saw it all come together. Based on the extremely positive response from Season 1, the first thing we learned was that there was an audience and a demand for the content.

While filming Season 1, some contestants were reluctant to be interviewed by us as they weren't sure what we were doing or how they would be portrayed. After Season 1 was released, contestants were chasing us down to be interviewed and take part in the show.

We also learned that for Season 2, we needed to dig even deeper and cover more content to tell the entire story of what transpires over the course of the Circa Survivor contest, so we doubled down on coverage and doubled the number of episodes.

What's been the wildest or most memorable moment from last year's contest that you think defines the spirit of Circa Survivor?

Mike Palm: For me, the wildest moment was the Cowboys at Commanders game in Week 12. The Commanders were 10-point favorites and had a significant portion of the remaining Survivor entries on them, including a few watching the game with us at Circa. They trailed Dallas 27-20 with under 20 seconds left in the game.

Jayden Daniels completed a miracle 86-yard touchdown pass to Terry McLaurin with 12 seconds to go. There was pandemonium in the book. Only to have Austin Sieber miss the extra point. The elation turned to stunned sorrow in an instant.

The docuseries goes beyond just sports to show us the strategy and real drama behind the contest. How do you balance entertainment and authentic betting coverage? And what role does data or betting analysis play in the show?

Stephan Shelanski: It's definitely a balance to keep the show fast-paced and entertaining, while also staying on top of all the details of the contest and the intricacies of the strategies. At first, the episodes are lighter and more about getting to know the personalities, but the further we get into the season, the further the contest intensifies.

The latter half of the episodes has more information on strategies, complexities of the planning, monetization opportunities of the implied value, etc. Betting analysis plays a very important part in the show, especially in the back half of the season.

What kind of viewer are you targeting with this series, be it bettors, sports fans, or general docuseries lovers? Are there specific stories or characters from Season 2 you think viewers will connect with right away?

Stephan Shelanski: We feel the show has appeal to anyone who likes to watch football, which is a potentially huge audience worldwide. It may have a stronger draw with people who bet on sports, but you don't have to bet on sports to engage with the series.

And yes, there a numerous interesting storylines that viewers will connect with right away. We have one storyline around a young man in New York City who was getting married in early December and then taking a two-week honeymoon. His bride-to-be insisted on a tech-free trip, meaning he couldn't watch any football for three weekends in December. Can you imagine still being in the contest with more than $14M at stake and you can't watch the games to see if you are still alive each week during the climax of the season? We also have a large group of butchers who named their team Meatballs, and we followed them throughout the season, as well.

With a condensed 10-episode season, how did you approach pacing and storytelling to reflect a 20-week contest in just a few hours of TV?

Stephan Shelanski: The pacing of the episodes mirrors the events happening in the NFL. Weeks of volatility and upsets take up a lot more time within an episode, and weeks of calm take up less time. So, the content of each episode is dependent on what was happening during the action of these football games. There was a ton of great content that we sadly had to leave out of the show because we just couldn't fit it in, which is always the hardest part.

For 2025, Circa Sports is introducing a new high-roller $100,000-entry Survivor contest, called Circa Grandissimo. What kind of bettor are you aiming to attract? How does this expand the brand's consumer base?

Mike Palm: We hoped to attract not just a customer who has six figures to invest in a contest, but one who might seek luxury experiences. With a maximum of two entries, the Circa Gandissimo contest also introduces a different game theory than the Circa Survivor contest.

Our brand certainly focuses on providing unique experiences and selling fun. These contests create an amazing five-month journey for our customers. The community that has sprouted up surrounding, particularly Circa Survivor, is a great sign, but was not necessarily intentional.
