The Betting and Gaming Council (BGC) has announced the official appointment of Grainne Hurst as its new CEO. Hurst, who previously served as Group Corporate Affairs Director at Entain, succeeds Michael Dugher, who has transitioned to the role of Chairman as part of the BGC's leadership restructuring.
Grainne Hurst brings a decade of experience in the gambling sector, having led key initiatives at Entain, including the development of the Entain Foundation and the company's award-winning global safer gambling strategy. Hurst also played an important role in expanding the Global Gaming Women initiative, with a focus on increasing diversity in the industry.
In her first comments as CEO, Hurst emphasized her commitment to implementing the proposals outlined in the government’s White Paper, which seeks to modernize the gambling sector while ensuring consumer protection.
"There is a huge amount of work ahead of us, not least delivering and implementing the outstanding proposals outlined in last year’s White Paper," said Hurst, referencing key priorities like the introduction of a statutory levy to address problem gambling, new stake limits for online slots, and a Sports Sponsorship Code.
Michael Dugher
Michael Dugher, the newly appointed Chairman, expressed confidence in Hurst's leadership, stating that her extensive experience and vision would help guide the BGC into its next chapter. Dugher highlighted the importance of stability, growth, and data-driven decision-making to ensure the industry's responsible future.
The BGC represents over 90% of the UK’s regulated betting and gaming industry, supporting 110,000 jobs and contributing £7.1 billion ($9.29 billion) to the economy. Hurst’s appointment comes as the industry faces new regulatory challenges, with an emphasis on increasing accountability, improving consumer redress, and promoting safer gambling practices.
