A ministerial order has been issued for the application of general online gaming and betting licenses in the country.

The call for licenses is the third issued since online gaming was regulated in 2011 and will run from December 17, 2017 to December 16, 2018.

In accordance with data disclosed by the DGOJ (Directorate General for the Regulation of Gambling) the Spanish online gambling and betting market continues to grow: in the third quarter of 2017, it reached a 16.6 percent increase in gross gaming revenues in the quarter, USD 164 M in the period, despite a three percent fall in advertising spend year-on-year. Sports betting accounted for 54.8 percent of the GGR, increasing by 37 percent compared with the same quarter of 2016.

Sports betting revenues stood at USD 90 M and from casino games, 54.2 percent up at USD 52 M. Slots were the greatest component of the casino games sector contributing USD 26 M or 50.9 percent to the general revenue with roulette second at €9.1m. But poker also showed signs of improvement, reaching €14.7m, 6.8 percent up on the equivalent quarter.
