The Australian Football League’s Commission has endorsed the AFL’s bid to make its way into esports market.

The AFL said that its expertise in “sporting governance, policing integrity issues and running competitions” made it well suited to aid the development of the Australian e-sports industry.

According to a report published by the Sidney Morning Herald website, ESports – or professional video gaming – is a USD 1.2B global industry, with an annual audience of 239 million in the highly valuable 14 to 34-year age group. However, Australia's eSports industry is considerably smaller than the industry in the United States, Asia and Europe.

While the AFL is one of Australia's most financially successful sporting organisations it believes more needs to be done to engage with young people, whose time spent online or in digital environments has skyrocketed in the last 10 years.

Since last year, ESPN has announced that they were scaling back their push into esports broadcasting, a move the AFL has surely studied as they plan their entrance strategy.
