Macau’s airport reported on Monday a record of 6.6 million passengers last year, with over 56,000 aircraft movements, representing a 14% and 2% year-on-year increase.

The report cited by Xinhua also said the 21-year-old airport added three new international routes in 2016: Guiyang in the mainland, Manado in Indonesia and Fukuoka in Japan. The airport now serves 41 cities in the mainland, Taiwan, Southeast Asia and North Asia.

The airport also attracted seven new airlines last year: AirExplore SRO, Vietjet Air, Far Eastern Air Transport, Air Seoul, PT Lion Mentari Airlines, JSC Royal Flight Airlines and Nok Air.

The report said that last year the mainland market increased 4 percent in passenger movement, while Taiwan and Southeast Asia rose 15 percent and 20 percent respectively. Passengers taking regular and low-cost airlines increased 16 per cent and 9 per cent respectively.

The airport management said in a statement that it will complete several infrastructure projects this year, such as the airport’s north terminal building expansion, which will increase airport capacity to 7.5 million passengers per year, a hangar for business jets, and enhancement of the carrying capacity and safety performance of the single runway.
