Governor Tom Wolf signed a bill that has created some major changes to Pennsylvania’s liquor system that will impact how people can purchase and consume alcohol.

The new law also creates an option for casinos to purchase a license to serve alcohol 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The license will cost $1 million per year for the first four years and then $250,000 annually thereafter.

Representative John Payne is the Chairman of the Gaming Oversight Committee. He said Pennsylvania is now current with all the other states that have casinos. “We can now compete with our border states,” said Payne, “Now more residents who work other shifts, will stay in Pennsylvania instead of going to New Jersey or Maryland casinos that serve alcohol all day and night.”

Payne said that the new law will not have an impact on current laws regarding public safety. “Bartenders still have to follow the rules,” said Payne, “They can’t sell booze to visibly intoxicated people, this is about the convenience for people who don’t work the same shift we do.”

Payne said that he hopes 24/7 alcohol service will be in place by Labor Day.
