Canarias joins Madrid and Barcelona as an option for a Las Vegas Sands complex

(Spain).- The possibility of Canarias becoming a “European Las Vegas” is no more a utopia. The American dream may come true in the Islands promoted by Sheldon Adelson, owner of one of the greatest fortunes worldwide and owner of casino hotels in Las Vegas, Macau and Singapore.

President of Las Vegas Sands Corporation has been seeking for 20 years the best location in Europe to create a mega hotel and casino complex. According to the newspaper Expansión, after discarding Italy and Greece, the eight US fortune, with a patrimony of us$ 21,500 million, focused in Spain at the beginning of the 90s.


His eyes are put in Madrid and Barcelona, where they are now seeking for the necessary business support so Adelson chooses one of them. Canarias is not on his list, but according to several businessmen, he has options to push the project.


In fact, the president of the Regional Confederation of Businessmen (CEOE) of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, José Carlos Francisco, has insisted in several occasions on the possibility to turn Canarias into a gaming center. Tenerife has the climate, the land, the communication resources and the number of tourists that Adelson requires.


The investment is around 18,000 billion euros and the mega Project supposes the construction of six casinos, 12 thematic hotels, nine tetares and three golf courses.  Everything will be located in 800 hectares.


Such an investment, which would involve the creation of more than 12,000 direct and indirect employments, would solve part of the economic and social future of the Island. The petitions of the businessman are focused on more flexible jobs, to improve communications and also installing a free trade zone for gambling in the Cannary Islands.
