Veikkaus to join the UN Rio Conventions Calendar project

The firm was invited to join the cooperation project by the UN Climate Change Secretariats. The UN requires that its partners in cooperation are deeply committed to promoting corporate social responsibility and sustainable development.

Veikkaus has invested in the promotion of environmental responsibility by setting an objective to reduce the company’s carbon dioxide emissions by 35 % from their 2009 level by the end of the year 2013. “This means that we take sustainable development into account in all our activities. Veikkaus wants to be the world’s leading lottery even in corporate social responsibility,” says Veikkaus’ President and CEO Risto Nieminen.

“We also pay attention to environmental issues in the office environment. Veikkaus’ head office has been part of the WWF Green Office network in Finland since 2007 and our office in the City of Tampere joined the network this year”, he added.

The UN Rio Conventions Calendar has been published every year since 2003. Each Calendar presents twelve companies or organizations that work to promote sustainable development.

Besides Veikkaus, the 2012 Rio Conventions Calendar includes companies and organizations from Switzerland, Sweden, Germany, Japan, Spain, South Korea, Thailand, Ecuador, and Morocco. The Calendar will come out both in print and in electronic format.
