This certification is an internationally-recognized benchmark for creating and maintaining an Environmental Management System (EMS), which includes policies, procedures, and methodologies that define and support an established environmental policy and objectives.
"As a global organization, we are committed to our efforts in reducing pollution and conserving energy. The achievement of an ISO 14001:2004 certification provides further commitment to GPC's customers that we are delivering the highest quality product with minimal impact on the environment," said Arun Rao, GPC's Senior Engineering Project Manager, who also serves as GPC's Environmental Management Representative. "Our employees are enthusiastically dedicated to EMS, and our efforts in waste and energy reduction have become a large part of our corporate culture."
The ISO 14001:2004 certification provides a framework for a holistic, strategic approach to GPC's environmental policy, plans, and actions. Through GPC's EMS, the Company is committed to reducing electric and gas consumption by 10%, establishing a recycling program, and investigating ways to reduce the volume of liquid waste disposed at its Lakeland facility.
As part of the certification process, auditors from Quality Systems Registrars, Inc. toured GPC's manufacturing facility in Lakeland to verify its operational controls and processes. During the audit, employees were randomly selected and asked questions to measure their awareness of GPC's environmental policy and procedures.
In his report, the Quality Systems Registrars auditor summarized, in part, GPC's EMS system stating, "The best way to describe this environmental management system is 'energized.' There has been an enormous effort put forth by everyone in the organization, but particularly by the management representative and the implementation team. The internal audit, corrective action, and management review processes are all effectively used by the organization to monitor the system and identify opportunities for improvement."
The certification is specifically for the Lakeland GPC facility and is effective through May 10, 2014. GPC will be audited once a year to maintain the ISO 14001:2004 EMS certification. Earlier this year, GPC's parent company, GTECH Corporation, achieved ISO 14001:2004 certifications for its Providence and Coventry, Rhode Island facilities.
