PokerRoom.com was the creation of Swedish poker players Oskar Hornell and Claes Lidell and went live ten years ago. The pair teamed up with software developer Karl Hornell to develop the site, which grew tremendously along with the industry to become the top destination on the OnGame Network, known at that time as the PokerNetwork.
Vienna-based Bwin gained the rights to PokerRoom.com after purchasing OnGame just before the implementation of America's Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA) in 2006. As the prohibition led to falling player numbers from the US, Bwin announced late last year that it would be closing the site during the first quarter of this year.
Players at PokerRoom.com were advised last week that the site had now closed and have been offered the option of cashing out their funds completely or transferring them to Poker.Bwin.com and take advantage of a range of bonuses. In addition, players transferring their funds have been informed that they will be able to keep their PokerRoom.com nicknames.
