The gambling owners' jockeying for better tax deals at the state Capitol is the latest byproduct of the state's fierce casino competition, which grew in February with the opening of two upstate full-scale casinos in the Finger Lakes and Schenectady.
There are now 16 casinos or racetracks with video-lottery terminals in New York north of New York City. One more, the $1 billion Montreign casino in the Catskills, is set to open next year.
"We are hopeful that at the end of the day the Assembly will join the Senate in passing legislation that will help Vernon Downs keep its doors open," the track's owner, Jeff Gural, who also owns Tioga Downs in the Southern Tier, said in a statement.
