Macau: Slots to be out of residential areas soon
Once the bill is enacted, the government will negotiate a schedule with operators for the removal of parlours currently operating in such areas, Mr Tam said quoted by the Government Information Bureau.
The official explained the government is proposing to define an area within a radius of 300 to 500 metres from a casino as a “gaming zone”; anything outside of that will be considered a residential area. The government will also not allow any more new parlours to be built in residential areas. Parlours will only be allowed in casinos, hotels or commercial buildings.
Last month, Mr Tam already said the government still intends to ban slot-machine parlours from residential districts. The government first proposed the ban in 2007.
When asked about SJM Holdings’s Yat Yuen Canidrome Slot Lounge in Fai Chi Kei, Mr Tam said that the government would consider its removal if most residents deem it as negative issue.
