Louisiana voters to decide whether to legalize sports betting in November
Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards (D) has signed Senate Bill 130 (SB 130), which will ask the voters in each of Louisiana’s 64 parishes whether or not to authorize sports betting within the parish.
In Louisiana, a simple majority vote in both chambers of the state legislature is required to refer a statutory measure to the ballot, as well as the governor’s signature.
The Louisiana State Senate passed the sports betting bill in a vote of 29-8 on May 13, 2020, Ballotpedia News reports. The House of Representatives approved the proposal on May 17, 2020, in a vote of 71-23 with nine representatives absent.
The proposal does not spell out who would be allowed to bet on sports or where bets would be taken, nor does it set taxes or fees. The Gaming Control Board would have oversight once lawmakers set the rules.
In 2018, the legislature sent a similar set of parish measures legalizing fantasy sports to the ballot. Forty-seven (47) of the 64 parishes approved the measures, and 17 parishes defeated the measure.
