If passed, the proposal to legalize wagers on sporting events could be put before voters during next November’s election, so sportsbooks will likely not appear in the sate until 2021.

A Maryland sports wagering bill has been pre-filed in the Annapolis capital ahead of the state legislature’s upcoming 2020 session, which begins January 8.

Senate Bill No. 58, which comes from state Sen. Chris West, a Republican representing central and northern Baltimore County, calls for a voter referendum on the expansion of gambling and would lead to authorizing the Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Commission to issue sports wagering licenses.

Tax proceeds from sports betting would be allocated for public education, wcbc radio reports.

The bill states that operators who hold a video lottery operation license or one for thoroughbred and harness racing can operate a sportsbook. In short, casinos and pari-mutuel tracks have the potential to operate sportsbooks in Maryland. There are six casinos and five different horse tracks in Maryland.

Although the bill does not currently have mobile wagering, there is time to add it. Lawmakers in Maryland have the 2020 legislative session to decide on what the state needs for sports betting.
