State Representative Brandt Iden is sponsoring the legislation

Michigan: sports betting bill moves forward

"Because this is already going on in the market place so we can protect those people who want to play and want to play legally, and we can, you know, make the state a little bit of money, which I think is also a positive," Iden said.

A proposal to allow retail and online sports betting was passed Tuesday out of a state house committee.

State Representative Brandt Iden of Kalamazoo, who is sponsoring the proposal, hopes the sports betting bill continues to make its way through the legislature and onto Governor Gretchen Whitmer's desk before Superbowl season.

Brandt Iden said part of the reason he's for the legalization of sports betting in Michigan is to make the state a little bit of money, WILX reports.

"Because this is already going on in the market place so we can protect those people who want to play and want to play legally, and we can, you know, make the state a little bit of money, which I think is also a positive," Iden said.

Iden has been the driving force behind expanding legalized gambling in Michigan. He ushered through bills last session that would legalize betting on fantasy sports and online gambling through the state's 23 tribal and three Detroit casinos.

Even though the bills had widespread support in the Legislature, they were vetoed by former Gov. Rick Snyder, who opposed expansion of gambling in the state and feared a loss of revenue for the state lottery, from which revenues are funneled to schools.
