Indian Parliamentary Shashi Tharoor moves online gaming and fraud prevention bill
Indian representative in the Lok Sabha from Thiruvananthapuram Shashi Tharoor has this week moved a private bill, the Sports (Online Gaming and Prevention of Fraud) Bill, to regulate online gaming in India.
According to local sources, Tharoor has moved the sports bill seeking a regulatory mechanism for the online gaming sector in the country, which is largely unorganised but has seen the entry of many new players in the last two years.
"The bill, aimed at preserving the integrity of sports, is primarily divided into two parts: one that recognises the damage sports fraud inflicts and contemplates special procedures to deal with it, and another part that provides regulation of online sports betting activities, acknowledging that the increasingly commercial nature of sports and the financial incentives it entails sometimes gives way for vested interests and manipulation of sporting events," explained Tharoor .
The bill will be largely concerned with the presence of gambling in online games.
The market value of the gaming industry in India is estimated to reach Rs 71 billion by 2021.
