Learn answers to those questions and more at this interview-style discussion with two of the preeminent thought leaders on the topic: Scott Van Pelt, the anchor of ESPN's SportsCenter and an outspoken supporter of legalized, regulated sports betting - and Sara Slane, senior vice president of public affairs for the American Gaming Association (AGA) who led AGA's advocacy campaign to highlight the failures of PASPA (Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act of 1992) and helped to enable this significant opportunity.

Updates from the Show Floor

EVERI Prolific magicians Penn and Teller made an appearance at Everi's booth this year to commemorate the new Penn and Teller game, themed after the famed performers. The duo greeted and took pictures with groups of fans in front of the newly released game while admiring the interactive design of the machine.

Day 1 highlights were as follows:

G2E opening keynote - talk tiggers: turn your customers into volunteer marketers

In Tuesday's opening key note, Jay Baer, president of Convince & Convert Consulting, spoke to the expo audience on the importance and impact of word of mouth for businesses. Studies show that 50% of all purchases are made by peer recommendations, and millennials are much more likely to engage in this method. Using many interactive and amusing examples, the dynamic presentation highlighted four "talk triggers" to create memorable experiences that can be shared by satisfied customers. By offering generosity, responsiveness, usefulness and empathy, companies can give their customers a new story to tell that creates trust and higher engagement.

How states and tribes are preparing for legal sports betting

Tuesday afternoon, experts discussed various obstacles faced by states preparing to legalize sports betting in a session moderated by Chris Cylke, vice president of government relations for the American Gaming Association. Guest speakers included Susan Hensel, director of licensing at Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board; Matthew Morgan, director of gaming affairs for the Chickasaw Nation; and David Rebuck, director of the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement. Offering advice for those seeking to advance their sports betting markets, professionals encouraged regulators to look at other states, tribes and countries to develop a business model that complies with the specific laws implemented within their respective markets. In addition to examining the current state of sports betting in the U.S., panelists also emphasized the importance of securing strong regulatory systems in which operators are suitable, operations are seamless and the appropriate accounting systems are set in place.

Additionally, the casino industry does not want federal involvements, Slane said.

Meanwhile, there is no sports betting on sovereign tribal nation land yet, and legal issues have resulted from the intersection of tribal, federal and state laws regulating sports betting, according to Martin.
