In accordance with information provided by Europa Press, Spaniards spent around 5,200 million euros in sports betting operated by the government and by the State-owned Lottery and Gambling Society (SELAE) in 2016. This figure is five times higher than the 1,300 million wagered in 2012.

This data was revealed as a response from the Government to a parliamentary question raised by lower house member, socialist Miguel Ángel Heredia. The Executive broke down the amounts wagered on this type of activity.

The chart, collected by Europa Press, shows how the amounts have been growing during the past five years. The figure went from 1,300 million registered in 2012 to 2,300 in 2013 and over 3,100 in 2014. In 2015, it surpassed 4,300 million euros.

The government also provides information on the users of these activities, although in this case, the figures are from 2015. That year, 66.8% of online players in Spain engaged in any form of gambling.

Specifically, the number of gamblers increased by 34.4% compared to the previous year. In addition, the text points out that the gamblers’ profile is that of "a male aged between 26 and 35."

As regards online gaming users in a broader sense, the Executive explains that 86.8% of them are between 18 and 45 years old, a profile that "did not experience variations with respect to 2014". It also highlights that the average number active users each month was 379,883, while 85.7% of new players have come to participate in some sort of game.
