The National Lottery Commission of Uruguay (DNLQ) identified 17 sports betting sites linked to sports events, gambling and other industries that enabled gambling from within the country, and now is taking steps to block the sites. By mid-February, the commission was working to spot similar platforms and inhibit their operations.

"Due to the difficulty in identifying the creating and managing parties of these sites, a series of publications explaining the situation were made in the Official Journal," disclosed DNLQ Director Luis Gama to the local newspaper El País. This week will be the due date for the operators involved -including bet365, Pokerstars.net888.es and Bwin- to provide a statement.

In accordance with the deadlines set by the process, explained Gama, the block will likely be carried out next week. The sites involved are illegal in Uruguay since the law prohibits every kind of gambling unless specifically stated otherwise. The official highlighted that the aim of the measure is to protect a State-approved online platform, Supermatch.

A few months ago, the "provision of online services, technological platforms and applications, linked to gambling or online betting" was banned, and the State has the faculties to carry out surveys to forecast international sports results.

Gama also pointed out that, after blocking illegal websites to "clean" the online sports betting offer, the State will ponder whether it would be beneficial to organise further tender bidding contests to allow for sports betting exploitation on a national scope.
